La Cova Bastera (Prehisto-cave) “Encounter with Centuries” La Cova Bastera is located on 116 A-road and faces the Medieval City of Villefranche de Conflent. This natural cave went through various periods, from Ice Age to Prehistory, Vauban's history and Contemporary Period. It was after the occupation by the Miquelets in 1674, with the plot that led to their extermination, that Vauban decided the fortification of the opening of the cave. But, he could not see the end of his project as he died the year when the building work began, that is to say 33 years later, in 1707. After its military occupation, Elie Castillo bought La Cova Bastera in 1983 and started its touristic development. In 1988, his son Bernard took over the business.
